Did You Know…?
Ripon Jewel Ale was commissioned by Ripon Cathedral in 1999 and both the ale and its ingredients were blessed at a special service of dedication in the cathedral.
Ripon Jewel Ale takes its name and characteristics of timeless colour and quality from the Ripon Jewel. Discovered in 1976, this rare and valuable relic, made from gold inlaid with gemstones, is believed to originate from the 7th century when Saint Wilfrid built a basilica on the site of the present day cathedral.
There is a tradition of ale brewing at great Christian institutions both in Britain and throughout Europe that goes back many, many centuries.
